The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has launched the All
Ages, All Stages, NC Multisector Plan for Aging (MPA), a comprehensive roadmap
designed to enhance the quality of life and promote the well-being of older adults
throughout the state.

North Carolina’s demographics are changing. By 2042, North Carolina’s population of
adults 65 and older is projected to exceed 2.8 million, nearly a million more than today.
In 88 of North Carolina’s 100 counties, adults 65 and older currently outnumber those
under 18.

Recognizing this dramatic shift, the 10-year MPA focuses on four key areas to address
the needs of our growing population of older adults and to create environments where
they can thrive as active, valued members of their communities:

  1. Supporting Older Adults and Their Families
  2. Strengthening Communities for a Lifetime
  3. Optimizing Health and Well-Being
  4. Affording Aging

The MPA identifies “strengthening NC’s aging and health care workforce” as a priority
and outlines key action steps for investing in the recruitment, retention and training of
workers in age-related fields.

Work outlined in All Ages, All Stages is underway, and the plan ensures North Carolina
remains adaptable and responsive to the evolving needs of its aging population by
revisiting its priorities every two years. The Division of Aging is producing a data
dashboard which will track the initiative’s progress and facilitate evidence-based
decision making.
