Nursing students get real-life experiences before graduation
In the summer of 2023, East Carolina University College of Nursing launched a student nurse extern program in collaboration with ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. This initiative aimed to help fill nursing vacancies in eastern North Carolina by providing nursing students with practical experience before completing their final semesters. Eligible students were required to obtain Nurse Aide II certification, which allowed them to assist with patient care under supervision while learning the roles and responsibilities of registered nurses. The externship provided valuable hands-on experience, particularly in developing communication, time management, and patient care skills, crucial for transitioning from student to professional nurse.
The nurse extern program received positive feedback from both the participants and the program leaders. Graduates shared how the program enhanced their clinical skills, boosted their confidence, and provided insight into the daily workings of healthcare teams. Many students appreciated the opportunity to interact directly with patients, work in various hospital settings, and engage in interprofessional communication. Additionally, the program also serves as a recruitment and retention strategy for ECU Health.
The success of the ECU Health nurse extern program has prompted plans to continue and even expand, with hopes of offering more students the chance to gain crucial experience in diverse healthcare environments across eastern North Carolina.
