Wayne Community College has partnered with UNC Health Wayne. The local hospital is paying for a clinical nursing instructor to train students at Wayne Community College for five years to increase enrollment and address the current nursing shortage. In 2023, more than 75% of the community college’s nursing students were hired by UNC Health Wayne. In a bid to increase the number of seats at the community college, the local hospital is now funding the college’s clinical nursing instructor. The partnership will also feature an apprenticeship program that will allow LPNs at the hospital to work towards their RN license. The hospital will reimburse program participants for the coursework taken at the community college. The partnership model was modeled after the Surry-Yadkin Works apprenticeship program.
