Health Talent Alliance Dashboard
NC Health Talent Alliance data
NC Center on the Workforce for Health
The NC Health Talent Alliance conducts annual data collection and analysis to drive regional employer-led action through the Talent Pipeline Management framework. The information generated through this process measures current job demand and talent supply for critical positions in healthcare. The data dashboard visualizes statewide and regional trends.
About the tool
The NC HTA dashboard visualizes job demand and talent supply data using maps and charts with the ability to drilldown into various regional groupings. The data focuses specifically on trends related to registered nurses (RN), licensed practical nurses (LPN), nurse assistants (CNA), and medical assistants (CMA).
The NC HTA Dashboard includes the following job demand metrics:
- Open position rate: The percentage of unfilled positions compared to filled positions.
- Churn rate: The percentage of personnel who left the employer for non-retirement reasons compared to total personnel on staff.
- Total positions: Number of positions filled at the time of data collection.
The NC HTA dashboard includes the following talent supply metrics:
- Total number of health education programs
- Total number of graduates from health education programs
- Number of applicants to health education programs
- Number of applications to health education programs that met basic program qualifications
- Number of applicants offered admission
- Number of students enrolled
- Number of students who completed program
- Enrollment limit, which reflects any regulatory limits on how many students a program can enroll
To better understand longer term trends in employer needs, NC HTA leveraged JobsEQ data to track a metric called “replacement demand” that describes the annual demand for new talent due to job growth and people leaving the industry or workforce altogether. Without meeting this demand, ongoing shortages will likely compound year over year.
The NC HTA dashboard disaggregates job demand data by facility type. The dashboard consolidates more than a dozen facility types into 5 broad categories for ease of use:
- Behavioral Health: Facilities focused on providing behavioral healthcare.
- Health or Hospital System: Hospitals or hospital systems which may include a variety of facility types.
- Primary Care / Family Medicine: Facilities providing primary care and family medical services.
- Public: Publicly-funded healthcare organizations, including community health centers, correctional facilities, health departments, etc.
- Skilled Nursing: Skilled nursing facilities are organizations which provide a wide range of health and personal care services, including home health, hospice or palliative care, and nursing homes.
Regional Groupings
The NC HTA dashboard visualizes data in several regional groupings that are commonly used in delivery of health, education, and workforce programs. The NC HTA dashboard includes a table allowing users to select a county to identify corresponding regions.
The NC Area Health Education Centers (NC AHEC) program has nine regions across North Carolina. These NC AHEC regions organize a range of services and continuing education for health professionals. Learn more on NC AHEC’s website.
North Carolina organizes the state into six regions for delivery of Medicaid Managed Care. To learn more about NC Medicaid Managed Care, visit their website.
The State of North Carolina operates eight administrative regions known as Prosperity Zones. Each Zone features a one-stop, physical location, providing citizens and businesses the ability to interact with representatives from multiple state agencies, as well as to encourage better collaboration between the agencies themselves. Learn more about Prosperity Zones on NC Commerce’s website.
A “Council of Government” (COG) is an association of local governments that collaborate on planning, technical assistance, and delivery of programs that address regional issues. North Carolina has 16 COGs, which also function as North Carolina’s economic development districts. Learn more about COGs at the North Carolina Association of Regional Councils of Governments (NCARCOG) website.
About the data
The NC HTA dashboard primarily visualizes data collected through surveys of health employers and health education programs in early 2024. Data reflects information reported by survey respondents. NC HTA also uses data from JobsEQ to visualize “replacement demand.” For more information about NC HTA data sources and analysis, visit the NC HTA page of the Center’s website.
